Identity theft protection tips for those using hard copy checks:
- Omit phone number on checks. If necessary, put a work or cell phone # on checks instead of home phone.
- An address is not required. If necessary, use a PO Box instead of home address on checks. If you do not have a PO Box, use a work address.
- Never print a SS# or head shot photo on checks.
- No need to preprint full legal name or designate Mr & Mrs, Ms, etc on a check. Last name is sufficient if any.
Preprinting last name and cell number on a check is sufficient. Remember the required pieces of data on a check in order to cash it are: check #, date, $ amount, pay to the order of, dollar amount (spelled out), signature, issuing bank name, account # & routing number and endorsement.
The typical preprinted info is to assist the payee in applying a payment correctly to an account or mailing a thank you card. Avoid mistakes by printing clearly and using the memo field for account and/or invoice number instead.
